Best for: The tall sailor who wants the biggest owners' community and the most proven Hawaii record on the list.

The good

  • Nearly 800 built; Singlehanded Transpac and Pacific Cup regulars. The owners' association is enormous.
  • Deep keel, skeg-hung rudder, keel-stepped mast, and a new Yanmar 3YM30 on this hull.
  • Seller states 6'4" headroom; sister listings say the same.

The bad

  • 32 gal fuel and 54 gal water: this is a jerry-cans-on-deck boat for a solo crossing.
  • D/L 266 and Comfort 27 are the lightest in the tall section; it is quick and it bounces.
  • 1979 hull: survey the deck core around hardware and the rudder post.
The honest take

If you only look at one boat, look at this one, because the I-36 has done the exact passage more times than anything else under $30K. If it sells, a 1976 in San Francisco at $20,000, a 1976 in Oxnard at $16,900, and a 1978 in Ladysmith BC at $21,000 were listed the same day.

The Pact

We'll always be honest about gear. The good and the bad.

Most reviews you read only tell you what's great about a product. Ours tell you what's wrong with it too — where it fails, who shouldn't buy it, and when the cheaper option is the smarter one.

Every verdict comes from actually fishing the gear, not reading a spec sheet. When we get it wrong, the correction runs as loud as the original take.

The good and the badWe tell you what's wrong with a product, not just what's right.
