Side Imaging: Looking Left and Right

The big idea

Side imaging fires thin fans out BOTH sides of your kayak and paints a top-down photo of a swath wider than a football field. It's the single biggest search upgrade a kayak angler can buy — once you learn to read shadows.

Side imaging (Humminbird Side Imaging, Garmin SideVü, Lowrance SideScan) takes down imaging's thin fan and aims it sideways — one fan out the left of your kayak, one out the right, each reaching up to 100–150 usable feet at high detail (455 kHz stretches farther; 800 kHz and MEGA trade reach for clarity). Each ping samples one thin strip of bottom out both sides; as you paddle, strips stack into a continuous aerial-photo-style map of everything you pass.

Do the coverage math and you'll understand why this technology changed fishing. Your 200 kHz cone in 15 feet of water shows you a 5-foot circle. Side imaging set to 80 feet per side paints a 160-FOOT swath. One straight pass down a bank inspects more water than an entire morning of cone-sonar drifting. For a kayak angler with no trolling motor and limited miles in your arms, that efficiency isn't a luxury — it's the difference between fishing memories and fishing evidence.

Reading the screen takes one orientation trick. Your kayak is the thin line running up the CENTER of the display, newest slice at top. Immediately beside the centerline is a dark band on each side — that's the WATER COLUMN, the sound's travel time before it first touches bottom (its width mirrors your depth). Everything beyond the dark band is bottom, stretching out to your range setting. Left of center is literally the world off your left gunwale; right is right.

Shadows: the actual skill

Here's the counterintuitive core of side imaging: the SHADOWS carry more information than the objects. Sound streams outward nearly horizontally, so anything standing up off the bottom blocks it, leaving a dark acoustic shadow stretching AWAY from you behind it — exactly like a low evening sun casting long shadows across a field.

Shadows tell you three things instantly. HEIGHT: the longer the shadow, the taller the object — a stump throws a stubby shadow, standing timber throws one like a flagpole at sunset. SHAPE, honestly: the bright return of an object can smear, but its shadow is often a crisp silhouette — brush piles show their branch structure better in shadow than in echo. And for FISH, the giveaway: a bright dot with a shadow SEPARATED from it is a fish suspended off the bottom — the gap between dot and shadow is literally its altitude. Dot touching its shadow: on the bottom. No shadow: probably not a fish.

Bright-and-dark also decodes bottom composition at a glance: hard stuff (rock, gravel, shell, clay) bounces sound hot and draws BRIGHT; soft silt drinks it and draws dim. A bright hard-bottom patch on an otherwise dull mud flat is a classic fish magnet you'd never find by drifting a cone over acres of water — and on side imaging it jumps off the screen from 80 feet away.

Driving for a clean picture — and closing the loop

Side imaging picture quality is mostly boat control, and a kayak is genuinely GOOD at this. The rules: travel STRAIGHT — every wiggle of the bow bends and smears the strips (pedal drives and rudders shine here). Hold steady speed, 2–4 mph. Pick calm conditions when you can; chop rocks the transducer and ripples the whole image. Range setting: start around 60–80 feet per side — on MEGA/800 kHz that's the detail sweet spot — and widen to 100–120 only when you're purely searching.

Then close the loop, because a target you can't return to is trivia: almost every unit lets you TAP the object on the side imaging screen and drop a waypoint at its true position (the unit does the geometry). Waypoint it, circle back, and put your 2D/down-imaging cone right on top to check for life before you ever make a cast.

That's the full kayak search pattern, and it's worth stating as doctrine: side imaging to SEARCH wide, waypoint to MARK, 2D/down imaging to CONFIRM, then fish. Four steps, one straight paddle line, and you've done what used to take a guide years of local knowledge.

Tips to take on the water

  • 1.First trip with side imaging: run a straight line parallel to a bank past visible cover — a dock, a lay-down — and watch how known objects draw. Calibrate on truth before you interpret mystery.
  • 2.Scan INTO the wind when you can; you'll track straighter, and straight lines are 80% of image quality.
  • 3.Hunt bright patches on dull flats — hard-bottom transitions are invisible from the surface and glow on side imaging. Waypoint every one.
  • 4.A school of bait on side imaging looks like a loose cloud of static or 'breath on a mirror.' Find the cloud, then look UNDER and beside it for the dots-with-shadows.
  • 5.Don't max the range to 'see more.' Past ~100 feet per side on high frequency, you're seeing mush. Two passes at 80 beat one pass at 160.
