Fish Finder Course

Modern electronics are the biggest edge in fishing — and the most under-used. This course takes you from unboxing to actually reading water: sonar physics, frequencies and CHIRP, tuning your unit, down and side imaging, live sonar, and turning what you see on screen into fish in the boat.     What Is a Fish Finder?

    A fish finder doesn't find fish. It's an underwater flashlight made of sound — and once you know its three parts and what each one does, nothing on the screen will ever feel like magic again.

    How Sonar Actually Works

    Sonar is a stopwatch. Sound travels through water at a known speed, so timing the echo tells the unit exactly how far away everything is — and the entire screen is built from that one trick.

    Frequencies, CHIRP, and Cone Angles

    Frequency is the one setting that changes what your sonar physically IS: high frequency = narrow beam and crisp detail, low frequency = wide beam and reach. CHIRP is the cheat that softens the tradeoff.

    Every 2D sonar screen is the same five things: the surface, the bottom, the stuff between, the depth number, and the direction of time. Learn to name them and the screen becomes a sentence you can read.

    Auto mode is set for a demo room, not your lake. Five settings — sensitivity, range, scroll speed, palette, and filters — decide whether your screen shows fish or hides them, and tuning them takes two minutes once you know the recipe.

    2D Traditional Sonar vs Down Imaging

    2D sonar sees fish brilliantly and structure as blobs. Down imaging sees structure almost photographically and fish as faint dots. They're not rivals — they're two eyes, and the split screen is the whole trick.

    Side Imaging: Looking Left and Right

    Side imaging fires thin fans out BOTH sides of your kayak and paints a top-down photo of a swath wider than a football field. It's the single biggest search upgrade a kayak angler can buy — once you learn to read shadows.

    Everything before this lesson shows you where fish WERE. Live sonar is a video feed of where they ARE — you watch a fish swim, watch your lure fall toward it, and watch it decide. That flip from past to present changes how you fish.

    What Matters Most: Structure, Bait, Then Fish

    Anglers who chase fish marks lose to anglers who find structure and bait. Fish are the last, smallest, most mobile piece — search in the right order and they stop being random.

    Putting It Together: Find a Fish and Make the Cast

    Everything in this course collapses into one repeatable loop: map homework, search wide, mark, confirm, position, cast, log. Run the loop every trip and 'finding fish' stops being luck.
