Anglers who chase fish marks lose to anglers who find structure and bait. Fish are the last, smallest, most mobile piece — search in the right order and they stop being random.
The doctrine, and why fish-chasing fails
Here is the most common way electronics get wasted: paddle around scanning for fish marks, see one, cast at it, repeat. It fails for a structural reason — a fish mark is one animal, at one instant, that was probably moving and is gone when your lure arrives. You're navigating to where something briefly was. Meanwhile the things that RELIABLY predict fish — the shape of the bottom and the location of food — sit still, hold for hours or weeks, and are far easier to find on sonar.
So the doctrine, in the order that works: STRUCTURE first — find the bottom features that concentrate life. BAIT second — confirm the food is in the neighborhood. FISH last — and by that point they're barely a search at all, because you already know where they have to be. Structure without bait is a house with no groceries. Bait without structure is a meal with no address. Both together is where you fish.
Two words you must keep straight, because every article and tournament interview uses them precisely. STRUCTURE is the shape of the lake floor itself: points, ledges, humps, channels, flats — the terrain. COVER is stuff ON the terrain: brush, weeds, rock piles, dock pilings, lay-downs. A ledge is structure; the brush pile on it is cover. Fish relate to structure for navigation and comfort, and to cover for ambush and safety. The best spots stack all of it: structure + cover + bait.
Reading terrain: breaklines, points, and the milk run
The key terrain concept is the BREAKLINE: anywhere depth changes fast — the edge of a flat, a channel swing, the side of a hump. Breaklines are fish highways. They offer deep water (safety) and shallow water (food) within one tail-kick, and predators patrol them like commuters on a route. On your 2D screen a breakline is simply where the bottom line dives; on a contour map it's where the lines pinch tight together.
Which brings up the tool this lesson quietly runs on: MAPPING. Your unit's contour map (or a free web map of your lake, studied the night before) shows every point, hump, and channel swing before you ever paddle. The homework pattern is simple and brutal in its effectiveness: pick FIVE candidate spots off the map at the depth range the season suggests, then spend your water time verifying them with sonar instead of wandering. A kayak has a small daily range — spending it on pre-selected structure instead of open-water roulette is the single biggest catch-rate multiplier available to you.
Season sets the depth to hunt. SPRING: fish push shallow to spawn — flats, pockets, the warm ends of creeks; your temp readout matters most now. SUMMER: heat drives them to the thermocline and shaded/deep edges — breaklines adjacent to the deepest nearby water. FALL: they follow bait, which roams shallow flats — find bait or find nothing. WINTER: deep, tight, slow — basins and the sharpest breaks, schooled up. Same lake, four different maps.
Bait, the thermocline, and stacking evidence
Bait reading, one level deeper than Lesson 4: SHAPE IS MOOD. A loose, spread-out haze of bait is relaxed — nothing is hunting it. A tight, dense, ball-shaped school is COMPRESSED — that shape is a defensive formation, and it means predators are working it right now. A tight ball with thick marks beneath or beside it, or a ball with ragged edges and streaks slashing through: you have found active feeding, and you should already be picking up a rod. Also respect the empty half of this signal — screens with NO bait for long stretches are the lake telling you to relocate, however pretty the structure looks.
THE THERMOCLINE, properly: in summer, lakes stratify into a warm upper layer and a cold lower layer, separated by a sharp transition band. The density change reflects sound, so on 2D with sensitivity pushed up (Lesson 5 recipe) it draws as a fuzzy horizontal band across the screen, commonly 12–25 feet down. It matters because by late summer the water BELOW it holds too little oxygen — fish and bait stack at or above it. The moment you can see the thermocline, you've cut the vertical search space in half. Structure that intersects the thermocline depth — a point that tops out right at the band — is a summer spot factory.
Now stack it all into one picture, because this is the skill: a breakline on the map, confirmed on sonar; hard bottom on the drop (thick line, second return); brush on the edge (down imaging); bait over it (2D cloud); the thermocline crossing at the same depth. Any ONE of those is a maybe. Three or more agreeing is where you spend your hour — and this stacked-evidence habit, more than any single feature, is what separates anglers who use electronics from anglers who own them.
Tips to take on the water
- 1.Night-before ritual: five spots off the contour map at the season's depth, in a paddle-order loop. You've just built what tournament anglers call a milk run.
- 2.On the water, grade spots fast: structure? bait? life? Two of three = fish it. One = waypoint and move on. Zero = leave immediately, however good it 'should' be.
- 3.Crank sensitivity briefly in summer to find the thermocline band, note its depth, then hunt structure that intersects that depth.
- 4.Tight bait ball = being eaten. Loose bait haze = nobody hunting. Read the shape before you read anything else.
- 5.Keep a simple log: every fish caught — depth, structure, bait present or not. Ten trips of entries becomes YOUR lake's pattern book, worth more than any article about someone else's lake.
