The big idea
Every 2D sonar screen is the same five things: the surface, the bottom, the stuff between, the depth number, and the direction of time. Learn to name them and the screen becomes a sentence you can read.
Orient yourself: depth is vertical, TIME is horizontal
Start every glance at the screen the same way. Vertical = depth: the top of the screen is the surface, the bottom of the screen is as deep as the current range shows. Horizontal = time: the right edge is what the transducer hears RIGHT NOW, and everything to the left is progressively older history sliding away. You are not looking through a window into the water — you're reading a strip chart the unit is drawing, newest column first.
This is worth over-learning because it kills the classic beginner misreads: the screen scrolling doesn't mean you're moving; a wide mark doesn't mean a wide object (it might mean you sat over it a long time); and that fish you see in the middle of the screen isn't in front of you — it's behind you, back where you were twenty seconds ago. When something exciting appears at the RIGHT edge, it's under you NOW. That's the only column of pixels that's live.
The bottom line is talking to you
The thick line running across the lower screen is the bottom, and it carries far more information than 'where the floor is.' Read its WEIGHT: a hard bottom — rock, gravel, hard clay, a shell bed — returns a strong echo and draws THICK and bright. A soft bottom — silt, muck — soaks up sound and draws thin and mushy. Hard spots concentrate fish on many lakes, and you can find them with a $150 unit by watching nothing but line thickness.
Then there's the tell that beginners walk right past: the SECOND RETURN. On very hard bottom, the echo comes back up, bounces off the water's surface, travels down, bounces off the bottom AGAIN, and returns a second time — so the unit draws a fainter copy of the bottom line at exactly double the depth. A visible second return is the strongest hard-bottom signal that exists on 2D sonar. Cruising along and the second return suddenly appears? You just crossed onto rock or shell. Drop a waypoint.
Also learn the bottom's LIES. On a steep slope the cone touches multiple depths at once, so the bottom line thickens and blurs — that's slope, not softness. And dense weed beds can draw a false 'bottom' above the real one, with the true bottom showing faintly through. If the depth number seems to disagree with the line you see, you're usually over grass.
Arches: why fish draw curves
The famous fish arch isn't a picture of a fish — it's a graph of DISTANCE. Remember the cone. A fish swims into the edge of the beam: it's relatively far from the transducer, so it draws deep. It passes through the middle: closest now, drawn shallowest. It exits the far edge: far again, drawn deep. Far–close–far, painted left to right as time scrolls: an arch.
That mechanism, once you own it, decodes every arch variation. HALF ARCHES mean the fish clipped the edge of the cone or the cone clipped the fish — most of your marks will be partial, and they count. LONG FLAT LINES mean a fish holding still in the beam while you sit still: distance isn't changing, so the unit draws a horizontal streak. Kayak anglers park on spots constantly, so you will see fish as LINES more often than arches — do not scroll past them thinking they're noise.
And arch SIZE: a bigger arch is not simply a bigger fish. Arch length mostly measures time-in-beam (a slow fish draws long), and arch height responds to depth and range settings. The honest size cue is the THICKNESS and intensity of the mark — how many pixels of strong echo it paints vertically. Thick, bright, saturated mark = big target. Long thin arch = leisurely dink.
Bait, clutter, and the numbers
BAIT BALLS — schools of shad, minnows, or other forage — draw as clouds, clumps, or streaks of small returns: dozens of tiny targets too close together to separate. They can look like cotton, like a stack of dashes, or like a dense ball, and they are the single most valuable non-fish thing on your screen, for reasons Lesson 9 makes into doctrine. Distinguish them from a single fish by texture: a fish is one coherent arch or streak; bait is granular, a crowd.
SURFACE CLUTTER is the noisy band hugging the top of the screen — wave action, bubbles, your own paddle wash. Ignore it, but don't crop it: fish do feed within a few feet of the surface, and cranking 'surface clarity' filters to maximum can erase them along with the noise.
Finally the numbers: DEPTH is read from the strongest bottom echo in the cone — trust it, with the slope caveat from earlier. WATER TEMP comes from a sensor in the transducer and reads only the surface skin — priceless in spring when a two-degree pocket concentrates the entire spawn, meaningless about what's happening twenty feet down.
Tips to take on the water
- 1.Drill for your next trip: say out loud, for every mark — 'bottom, hard,' 'bait,' 'fish, small,' 'surface junk.' Narrating forces recognition. Ten minutes of this is worth ten trips of passive staring.
- 2.See arches or lines within a couple feet of a thick bottom line? Predators pinning bait to the floor. That's a 'stop and fish' screen.
- 3.Watch for the second return all day. It appears = you found hard bottom = waypoint, every time, no exceptions.
- 4.A fish mark at the right edge is under you NOW — drop straight down before you drift. A mark mid-screen is history; go back for it, don't cast at it.
