The big idea
Auto mode is set for a demo room, not your lake. Five settings — sensitivity, range, scroll speed, palette, and filters — decide whether your screen shows fish or hides them, and tuning them takes two minutes once you know the recipe.
Sensitivity: the one setting that matters most
Sensitivity (Garmin calls it Gain) is the volume knob for echoes: how weak a return still gets drawn. Set it too LOW and the screen looks beautifully clean — because it's hiding things. Faint targets vanish first, and 'faint' includes exactly what you care about: bait balls, fish at the cone's edge, fish tight to bottom, the thermocline. Set it too HIGH and the unit draws every stray reflection and crosstalk speckle, burying real targets in snow.
The recipe is old, simple, and correct: TURN IT UP UNTIL THE SCREEN SPECKLES WITH NOISE, THEN BACK OFF ONE NOTCH. That puts you at the edge of the unit's hearing — everything real gets drawn, almost nothing fake. On most units this lands somewhere between 60% and 85%, but the number doesn't matter; the edge does.
And it's not set-and-forget. The right sensitivity changes with depth (deeper water needs more), water clarity (stained water absorbs sound), and even bubbles under your hull on a windy day. Re-run the recipe when you change areas. It takes ten seconds and it is the highest-value ten seconds in this entire course.
Range: stop letting the screen jump around
Range sets how much depth the screen displays. AUTO range keeps the bottom in view by rescaling whenever depth changes — sensible, except it re-zooms constantly, which changes the size and shape of every mark while you're trying to learn what marks look like. Nothing sabotages a beginner's pattern recognition like a picture that keeps changing scale.
When you're fishing (not transiting), set range MANUALLY to just past the bottom: fishing a 20-foot flat, lock the range at 25. Now the picture is stable — every arch, every bait ball, every bottom change draws at a consistent scale, and your eye starts genuinely learning. When the depth changes for real, you'll see the bottom line move — and adjust once, deliberately.
One level deeper: UPPER AND LOWER LIMITS. If fish are holding 15 to 25 feet down over 40 feet of water, display only 10–30 feet. You've just tripled the pixels spent on the zone that matters — arches get taller, separation gets visibly better, and the empty water above and below stops wasting screen. This is the single most underused feature on mid-range units.
Ping speed, scroll speed, and reading while parked
Ping/scroll speed controls how fast new columns of history get painted. The principle: match it to how fast you're moving. Paddling along searching? Fast scroll, so the picture keeps up and structure draws with honest proportions. Parked on a spot? Slow it down — at high scroll while stationary, the same fish gets repainted ping after ping and smears into a long streak that beginners misread as a school.
This matters more on a kayak than any bass boat, because you occupy the two extremes: dead-stopped or slow-drifting. Learn what a parked screen looks like at your chosen scroll speed, and remember from Lesson 4 — when you're parked, fish are LINES. The length of the line means 'time,' not 'size' and not 'number of fish.'
Palettes, filters, and the settings that lie
COLOR PALETTE is genuinely personal, with two rules. Pick a high-contrast palette you can read in direct sunlight (this is why tournament boats run so much white/blue and amber). Then KEEP IT. Your pattern recognition is trained on specific colors; switching palettes every trip resets part of that training for zero gain.
FILTERS — noise rejection, surface clarity, interference rejection — all work the same way: they decide some echoes aren't real and delete them. The problem is they can't tell a faint fish from faint noise. Run them at LOW or OFF by default, and reach for them only when you have an actual noise problem (usually another sonar nearby, or turbulence). A filter you don't need is sensitivity you gave away.
And turn FISH SYMBOLS (Fish ID) off, permanently. That mode replaces raw returns with cartoon fish icons whenever the software guesses — and it guesses wrong constantly, tagging weed clumps and turbulence as fish while hiding the real arch shapes you're trying to learn. Your five-minute launch ritual, in order: (1) confirm frequency — high CHIRP/200 kHz; (2) run the sensitivity recipe; (3) lock manual range for the depth you'll fish; (4) set scroll to match your speed; (5) filters low, symbols off. Do it every trip until it's automatic. This ritual alone puts you ahead of most anglers on the water.
Tips to take on the water
- 1.One change at a time. Adjust a setting, watch thirty seconds, then decide. Change three things at once and you'll never know which one helped.
- 2.Take phone photos of screens you don't understand. Compare them at home against this course — mystery marks usually decode on the second look.
- 3.If the screen suddenly turns to snow mid-trip, don't reach for sensitivity first — check for air on the transducer (weeds, a bag, a tilted arm). Physical problems masquerade as tuning problems.
- 4.Write your good settings down (or save them as a preset if your unit allows). Post-firmware-update amnesia is real.
